One of the first things that comes to mind when we consider crochet is a lovely handmade afghan. For any crochet lover this is by far one of the more common things to make. We only need to mention the word Afghan and anybody who knows anything about crochet will immediately appreciate the beauty and impressive impact that this lovely pattern can have on people. There are just so many never ending possibilities for materials for your afghan crochet pattern that you are literally assured that you will be able to style an original afghan for whatever room you desire in your house or for that matter, any particular person that may be on your list for preparing gifts for.

Ranging from the finer gauge fibres that fit into the airy summer throws to the dense, bulkier yarns that will make up the most comfy of winter wraps; you will never be at a loss for ideas for handmade blankets or covers. The other super thing about the wide variety of an afghan crochet pattern is that you can take on a project like this at any skill and experience level. Just try to remember though that Afghans do tend to take some time to consider, simply because of their size alone, so be certain you are ready to put yourself whole heartedly to a project that may well be somewhat longer than what you had originally envisaged.

The Various Kinds of Afghan Crochet Patterns

Probably one of the most sought after kinds of an afghan crochet pattern is that of the granny square pattern. This can be made up of many minute squares sewn together, or one massive square that doesn’t finish until your blanket is the size you want. You can create granny square blankets that are all one colour, or build a design of stripes or checkerboards. You can use various kinds of fibres to vary the texture within your blanket, or simply keep your yarn the same throughout the project. The trick is to just take your project in its stride and really think about every aspect of what your doing. Because the afghan crochet pattern is such a great project to work on you will and should thoroughly enjoy every minute of working on it.

The choices you have in a granny square afghan crochet pattern are really beyond scope; another popular afghan crochet pattern is called the “mile-a-minute” afghan. Placed into long strips the patterns are then sewn together. These are great fun to put together, because each panel is a great take-along project to bring with you to kids’ activities and in the car. There are also filet afghan crochet patterns which utilize one basic stitch combined with chain stitches to form shapes and pictures in your blanket.

You might even use this technique to make a customized blanket with your initials worked into it. The ripple afghan crochet pattern has been circulated in various forms for years, and remains a popular choice for many crochet gurus.

The Finishing Touch For Your Afghan Crochet Pattern

In most instances an afghan crochet pattern will have demonstrations for some type of finishing effect, perhaps a border around the boundary of the blanket. You can also create your own finishing touches, by using picots, shell stitches, or a basic single crochet edging. Whatever your choice the final elements will allow your project that last ‘nicing it up’ to make it your very own masterpiece. An afghan crochet pattern is a fantastic project to have on hand when the weather turns cold and dreary. So go on, start shopping around now for your favourite afghan crochet pattern!

Crocheting is a rewarding and popular activity that requires a certain amount of creativity. There are many areas of crocheting to learn and even those who are experienced in crocheting may not have knowledge in certain aspects. Crochet magazines are excellent sources of patterns, tips, ideas and general providers of information regarding the topic. Many people purchase crochet magazines because they are looking for a certain type of pattern or else because they need tips on how to perfect their skill. As beginners progress, they may rely on crochet magazines to further them along with more complicated designs and works. From scarves to dresses, there is a crochet magazine to suit any need.

Some crochet magazines are for complete beginners, while others contain information on more complicated areas of crocheting. There are a number of crochet magazines for the fashion conscious; they provide patterns and ideas on how to recreate the latest trends and fashions with simply homemade crocheting methods. Many crochet magazines are great resources from where to purchase good patterns and crocheting equipment. Due to the fact that many beginners may not have access to a local supplier, this can be very helpful.

There are a huge variety of crochet magazines available for purchase in stores as well as borrowing from a library. There are even online versions of crochet magazines so both novices and experts in crocheting are widely catered for. The main types of crochet magazines are basically sources of patterns for any level of proficiency. These are popular as they give a diverse selection of designs that are usually cheaper and more fashionable than buying a pattern book. Some of these magazines solely supply patterns for clothes while others combine a variety of patterns concerning doilies, cloths, baby bonnets and even bootees.

There are also a large number of these magazines that focus on the instruction of crocheting. They mainly concentrate on the different styles of crocheting and how to create certain shapes, for example. They usually go through the entire process step by step and are a great way to practice. Some only cover the very basics, offering limited designs and methods. Others cater for more complicated designs and patterns as well as additions using knitting and even embroidery. Every aspect of crocheting is covered by a number of craft magazines and anyone who is interested in crocheting should find an almost unlimited supply of help and information.

Sometimes, it is just a peice of plastic ribbon which is no use, but 9 times out of 10 it is real fabric ribbon and you can use it in many ways.

You can use it in card making, scrapbooking, candle making and even knitting.  Just cut them off the garment, they are very annoying anyway, and keep them in your craft box.

The next time you need a peice of ribbon, use one of the peices you have saved.

There are many supplies used when crocheting and the specific kinds depend solely on the type of patterns used. There are many basic items that beginners need but when using more complicated patterns and designs it can be essential to expand on the crochet supplies used. Yarn and a crochet hook are the most basic supplies but also used are knitting needles and a wide variety of yarn types amongst other items. More than one hook and needle set is needed as they can be left in an unfinished part of the crocheted item while another area is concentrated on. Patterns are a necessary part of the process, especially for beginners or if the person is creating something for the first time.

Anyone learning how to crochet may also need supplies of books or magazines full of tips and patterns. Depending on the type of pattern, other crochet supplies may be needed such as ribbon or lace. Ribbon can be run through certain areas of a crocheted design and lace can be a necessary addition to many designs. When making clothes, materials that can be layered under the yarn may be an important part of your crochet supplies. Sewing needles, threads, beads, sequins and other accessories can all form part of a crochet supply box as they can add decoration to a crocheted piece. There is so much that can be done with crocheted materials that the lists of possible crochet supplies are enormous.

Crochet Yarn Supplies

One of the most significant parts of crocheting is the types of yarns used. There are a huge number of different yarns used for crocheting; the texture and thickness of the yarn is most important. Yarn can have a lot of variations: some are thick, others are thin; yarn can be soft, fluffy, hard and come from many different animals. Yarn can be either natural or synthetic and the five basic types are baby/fingering, sport/baby, worsted weight, chunky and bulky – and they all have different uses.

Fingering weight is mainly used for light items such as socks. Sports weight is heavier and used for items like sweaters. Worsted weight is for much heavier and warmer items. Chunky and bulky are used for very heavy and warm items. Some of the most popular fibers used in yarns include acrylic, alpaca, camel hair, cashmere, chenille, lambs wool, mohair and even silk. The types of yarn depend on the item of clothing and the pattern used. So, as you can see, you’ll need to get yourself a big box to keep all the crochet supplies you’re going to need!

By Amy Wells

Crochet patterns can look confusing at first. However, once you understand how a pattern works, and become familiar with the more common crochet stitches, you’ll find reading crochet patterns one of the easiest aspects of crochet. Learning to read a crochet pattern will help you feel more confident when learning the basics of crochet.

Patterns can be written in several different ways. Crochet instructions can be written out in abbreviations, presented as symbols, or can be a combination of both. While it may take a while to learn the symbols, they can save space, and after awhile, many experienced crocheters find them easier to read. Another good thing about crochet symbols is that they are international, so no matter where the pattern comes from, the symbols will usually be the same.

If you are trying to read and understand a crochet pattern, the best way is to have both the written instructions and the symbols handy. If a series of stitches doesn’t making sense by following the written instructions, often the symbols can clarify what is actually meant. Crochet charts and symbols can help clarify written instructions. Some crocheting, such as lace, is actually much easier to follow using a chart, than reading written instructions.

Here are some of the common abbreviations used in crocheting:

sc single crochet

ch st chain stitch

hdc half-double crochet

dc double crochet

sl st slip stitch

trc triple crochet

yo yarn over

tr treble crochet

sp space

sk skip

pat st pattern stitch

When reading crochet instructions, brackets and parentheses are used to convey related stitches. For example, if you came across this- “(sk 3 ch, 4 trc in next chain) across the row”, it would first mean you leave three chains unworked, referring to the sk, which stands for skip. In the fourth chain, you would then do four treble crochet stitches. You would then repeat the whole process across the entire row.

When you purchase a crochet book, or patterns, you’ll find the abbreviations and symbols will be explained at the beginning. Once you’ve worked with a few patterns, you’ll find yourself much more familiar with the instructions, and you won’t need to refer to the book any longer. The crochet symbols will become second nature. Similar, but easier than learning a foreign language, after a bit of study, crochet abbreviations and symbols will make perfect sense!

While crocheting has not been around as long as the ancient craft of knitting, like many crafts, it has undergone a resurgence in popularity. The first evidence of crochet wasn’t until the 19th century, as before then, people used more economical techniques to create fabric. Unlike sewing, crocheting developed as a leisure activity for women to create luxuries such as lace edgings, collars, and more. Today, crochet has a new look, as new fabrics, hooks, and yarns have become widely available.

Crochet differs from other types of sewing and needlework. While knitting loops yarn together with long needles, crocheting is a type of lace needlework that uses a hooked needle to interlock loops of a single thread. Hooks come in all sizes and shapes, and are often made out of aluminum or steel. The size and shape of the hook will effect the size of the stitch, and the size of the yarn also dictates the hook size.

Similar to knitting, crochet relies on basic stitches, and variations on the basic stitches. There are four main stitches. The first is the single crochet, which is the shortest stitch and creates a firm, flat effect. The three other basic stitches are the double crochet, half-double crochet, and the triple crochet. Crocheting starts with a foundation chain, a cross-stitched row that holds all stitches and succeeding rows.

The type of crochet yarn chosen will have a major effect on the finished product. Although there isn’t a standard for yarn size, yarns vary from lightweight, such as what would be used for baby clothes, to bulky or extra bulky, which are ideal for rugs. Wool yarn is a good yarn to start with, as it is stretchable, and silk is also good choice, although it is more expensive. When following a pattern, it is important to make sure you are working at the right gauge the pattern specifies so you will be able to reproduce the pattern accurately. Normally a suggested hook size is recommended, which will help you keep the same gauge. However, you should always do a swatch first to make sure.

Learning to crochet can be a fun and engaging activity. While there is some terminology to become familiar with, and some equipment need for each project, it doesn’t need to be overly complicated. Crochet also lends itself to small projects that can be completed in a few evenings, as well as more intense creations. If you are looking for a relaxing craft, crocheting can be rewarding.

If you are learning how to crochet, there are some things to consider that will make your crocheting experience easier and more fun. In addition to hooks and yarn, there are also several other tools that you should consider getting before you start a crochet project. Having everything in place at the beginning will make you feel much more prepared.

The first thing to consider is the type of hooks or hooks you’ll be using. Crochet hooks are made from a variety of materials, including: steel, aluminum, bone or plastic. The main criteria for working with a hook is one that is comfortable and feels good in your hand. The weight of the hook, hook material, and finger size and length will influence your decision. There is no specific requirements for choosing a hook, but depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet will be a consideration. Of course, if you are following a pattern, then the gauge requirements, our how many stitches you need to make an inch, is something you will also need to be aware of.

Purchasing an Afghan hook can be a good investment. Afghan hooks are used for specialized crochet projects, and they allow you to hold many stitches on your hook. The average crochet hook is six inches, but Afghan hooks come in 9, 14, and 20 inch lengths. They also have knobs on them to keep the stitches form falling off. Using an Afghan hook will make your crocheting even easier.

Yarns are now made in many different varieties for crocheting use. As a beginner, the easier yarn to use is one that has a medium or tight twist and a smooth surface. Crochet yarn is usually packaged as balls, not skeins, and the length of each yarn will vary depending on the thickness. You may want to consider an all natural blend, or if you are looking at synthetic yarns, get a blend of the two, which will have the benefits of both synthetic and natural.

In addition to yarn and hooks, there are other tools that will make crocheting easier. Markers are split loops or rings of colorful plastic that help mark your work. They help indicated the beginning of a row and help count the stitches. Tapestry needles are used in embroidery, but for crochet, they can be used to weave yarn ends and sew crochet pieces together.

There are even more tools that you can use once you get started in crochet, but having the above on hand will make your crocheting experience even easier. Its always better to assemble the tools you need ahead of time so you won’t be interrupted in the middle of a project. Soon, you’ll be crocheting one-of-a-kind crafts.
