My Mums knitting patterns

Some of you will be aware that my mother passed away in January this year.  Mum was always knitting and had loads of patterns, needles and other knitting related stuff.

My older sister had taken on the task of clearing out mums house and disposing of all the stuff that had accumulated over the past 40+ years!

I got an email at the end of last week from my sister asking me if I wanted mums patterns, and ofcourse I jumped at the chance and we set off on Sunday morning to pick them up.

mums_patterns_foldersOn the left of the picture there are about a dozen knitting books.  They range from Knitting and Crochet Encylopedia to Disney Knitting patters.

Each of the folders is full of knitting patterns, some of them are quite recent and some of them are from the 60s and earlier.

The blue box on the bottom left of the picture is also full on patterns.

I spent most of Sunday afternoon/evening just looking through all of the patterns and books and then looking through them again. :)

I found some patterns that I remember my mum had knitted for me when I was little.

I find comfort in the fact that although I can no longer speak to my mum, I can sit and knit some of the patterns that she has knitted in the past.  I would burst into tears when I came across a pattern that mum had written notes on.

mums_patterns_1966Here are just a couple of the older pattern books that my mum had.  The one on the right is from February 1966!  I don’t know when the other one came out but it certainly looks old from the hair styles and the patterns.

Some of the old patterns would still work today and I will not run out of things to knit for a very long time. :)

As sorry as I am to hear that you’ve lost your mother, it’s wonderful that you have crafting to share with your mother. I learned how to do most of my crafts from mom, and it’s nice to share the fruits of my labor with her. Last Christmas, I gave her a lace scarf that she loved, so this year – more scarves! Which is great for me, because I love trying out new lace patterns.

You’re blessed to have your mother’s patterns. I saved a few from destruction after my mum passed away and I’m so glad I did. There is something very special retaining patterns from earlier decades and with the connection to a beloved mother even more precious.
