I have managed to get a few things knitted over the past while, one of which is this Aran Cardigan, with a collar. The picture doesn’t do it justice, but it really turned out nice. I will probably knit some more in other colours and sizes, this one is knitted in Denim and is size36/38″. I will get some more photos of the other things that I have finished over the past couple of weeks online as soon as possible. The pattern is from “Hats On!” by Charlene Schurch I remember when I was maybe 12 or 13 knitting a Fair Isle jumper and doing the yoke on a circular needle but I haven’t done anything like it since. Everything went fine until I got to the crown shaping. I am used to written instructions and this pattern has a chart instead. By the time I had finished the hat I had gotten the hang of reading the pattern properly, but I don’t think my mistakes have made much of a difference and the hat fits my partner David and it looks ok. I just used some of my odd balls of Aran to do the hat and it didn’t take much yarn and it only took an evening in front of the tv to get it done, so I will be doing some more of these to use up some of the boxes of odd balls that I have. :) Technorati Tags: Aran, circular knitting, Hand Knitting, knitting in the round, two colour pattern
On one of my rare trips to Aberdeen, I went into John Lewis and bought a scarf kit. The kit included 3 balls of Rowans Kid Silk Haze, a pair of 4mm needles, and a pattern for 3 different garments. The 3 balls would be enough to knit either a shawl, a shrug or a scarf. I decided to start with the easiest one first. The scarf. In the picture, I am nearly at the end of the first ball and the scarf already measures about 20″, so by the time I am finished it should be over 60″, which is a good length for a scarf. My only problem with knitting this scarf, is that I can’t do it while watching tv. The pattern isn’t very hard and is quite easy to remember, but the yarn is so fine that it is easy to drop a stitch, so it needs full concentration. The scarf is lovely to touch and not itchy at all. The yarn is 70% Super Kid Mobair and 30% silk, so it is lovely and soft and very strong. Technorati Tags: Hand Knitting, Kid Silk Haze, Rowan
The dirty marks that were made while knitting have gone, so I won’t need to knit it again. I spent a lot of time online this week, adding more patterns, yarn and books to my collection. One of the books I bought was Victorian Lace Today by Jane Sowerby. I really want to do some lace knitting and this book was recommended on one of the many blogs that I read, so I thought I would give it a try. I will let you know how I get on. It looks very dirty, even though I washed my hands until they were sore, the garment still looks dirty, so I am going to have to wash it. Keep your fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong and all being well, I will post a picture as soon as it is done. Because my hands get all dry and sore when I wash them too much, I took some breaks from knitting the white aran and I managed to finish another scarf! This scarf was knitted in SirdarWOW. It is really thick yarn. I am going to try and knit a hat to go with the scarf, but with the yarn being so thick, it is really diffucult to sew up. Even sewing in the ends is quite difficult and I ended up with little flecks all over my floor where the pile had come away from the ends. I do have more of this yarn in other colours, and because it is so quick to knit, I will probably do some more scarfs with what I have, but I don’t think I will be buying any more of it. For this scarf I cast on 16 sts on 7mm needles and kept on knitting in stocking stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl) until I had used two balls of Sirdar WOW. I finally managed to finish the back of the white aran cardigan.
The back of any garment always takes the longest time to do. I will start the pocket linings and the front today. Hopefully, it won’t take much longer now to get it finished, although the sewing up will take a while. I took a break from knitting last night after I had finshed the back and I started reading one of my knitting magazines. This led me back to the computer to check out some of the yarn suppliers featured in the magazine. By midnight last night, I was reading all about Shetland lace and wanting to try it as soon as possible. :) I will let you know how I get on and I will add some of the links to suppliers that I found. I got another order for a white cardigan. This time it is for a ladys 40″ aran cardigan.
I knitted this pattern for myself last year and I wore the cardigan the last time I went to see this customer, and she liked the look of it and decided she would like it in white. I hate knitting with white! It never looks clean and I feel paranoid about getting it dirty and end up washing my hands all the time and they get all dried out and sore. I will just have to get on with it and get it done as quickly as possible. :) I will let you know how I get on with it.
